BURBERRY

Burberry’s history is rich and interesting.
Thomas Burberry founded the company in 1856 in Basingstoke, with the idea of creating clothing designed to protect against British weather conditions. In 1879 he invented gabardine, the first breathable and waterproof fabric, patented in 1888.
In 1893 Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen used Burberry gabardine during an expedition to the Arctic Circle.
In 1901, the company held a public competition to design a new logo for the brand, thus the equestrian horseman mark was born.
In 1912 the Tielocken coat considered the predecessor of the trench coat was patented.
During World War I, the Burberry trench coat was invented, which had a functional design and included shoulder straps used to attach military equipment such as gloves and whistles, D-rings for carrying grenades, the windbreak flap for additional protection during action, and the rain flap to allow water to run off easily.
In 1920 the Burberry tartan pattern was introduced as a lining for rainwear.
In 1934 Burberry offered same-day delivery to customers in London by its own vehicle.
This is just a brief overview of Burberry’s history, but there are many other interesting stages along the company’s journey.
